Do we need other security tools aside from antivirus? Investing in an antivirus as a security measure is a prudent idea. However, this security measure is only effective against traditional viruses and worms. Hackers and cybercriminals have taken their attacks a notch higher.

Why is an antivirus not enough?

An antivirus offers protection against basic viruses and worms. Today, hackers are launching more complex attacks like ransomware and malware to unsuspecting internet users.

Another reason why an antivirus is no longer enough is that its developers take time before updating threat definitions. This update window leaves you vulnerable to online threats.

There are way too many internet devices today. Keeping all of these devices safe requires more network security; this is not within the scope of an antivirus.

Major Cyber risks affecting the public in 2020

Sophisticated ransomware attacks

A ransomware attack happens when hackers gain access to important files and keep hold of them until they extort a ransom payment from the victim.

Ransomware attacks have become very prevalent thanks to the availability of malware-as-a-service kits on the dark web.

Analysts have predicted an upward surge with the year 2020 witnessing some of the most sophisticated attacks.

Cloud jacking

Noting that the number of individuals and businesses relying on cloud computing has been on the rise, hackers are now focusing on cloud jacking by injecting malware into different cloud services.

A successful cloud jacking attack can result in a data breach or compromise.

Mobile malware

The advancements in mobile technology have seen many users take a gradual shift from using computers and desktops to their smartphones.

To keep up with this shift, hackers are now devising mobile malware that targets the large chunks of data stored on these mobile devices.

5 Simple ways to secure your home network

5 security tools to protect your devices

Install a VPN

By a simple VPN download on your router, you are able to secure all the devices that are connected to your network. It is the best option to stay private and secure online activities.

Antimalware tools

Use malware protection tools in addition to the antivirus. This combination will help keep viruses, worms, malware and Trojans at bay.

Vulnerability scanners

Use a vulnerability scanner to run periodic checks on all devices on your network. These tools are important in confirming that there are no security holes or suggesting the most ideal fixes; should there be any.

Password management tools

Set up complex passwords that are hard to guess. Use a password management tool to set them and autofill them with each login.

Email security tools

Secure all your email correspondences using email security tools. These tools offer data protection by encrypting all the email contents.

The tools also offer constant monitoring; this is ideal in detecting any malicious emails that may hit your network.

Conclusion

To be able to contain today’s cyber threats, you need to have multilayered solutions in place. Use the security tools discussed above; in addition to antivirus to stay ahead of cyber attackers.

You have a good point in this article. That having an anti-virus is not sufficient for a security breach. Do you have a recommendation for each of your points? For example, 3 password managers for us to consider? That may be helpful not for me but also for other people and viewers as well.
